Meet Mrs. Standley
Hi - I am so excited to meet all of you and your families. I thought I would tell you a little about me and my family.
I was born and raised in Southern California. I moved to Oakridge in 1990 and lived there for 20 years. Coming from the big city I could not believe how beautiful everything was and how nice the people were.
I am married, my husband's name is Mike and have 4 kids-Lauren, Lindsey, Colton and Lucas. We also have 2 new grandsons- Lincoln and Easton. I have a dog named Koda who is a huge and I mean huge teddy bear. I am hoping to bring him to class once he learns his manners.
In 2014 I graduated from Western Governors University - an on-line college that uses a competency based program. Our school will be going to that system and I am excited to share in that with you. I think it is a wonderful way to learn, have control in your learning and see the growth you are making as you go. It also allows us to fail, see those failures and try again with new strategies.
My degree is in General Education (K-8) and Special Education (K-12) - I am excited to start working on my Master's Degree soon.
My Philosophy: It is so difficult to try and sum up all my ideas/beliefs about teaching in a paragraph. I do believe you first need a relationship - students need to know they are cared for and you believe in them. I also believe all students learn differently - they need to be challenged and encouraged at their individual level of "best". I believe learning should not be contained in a box - students can learn in so many ways and the more interesting and fun the subject is, the more engaged the learner will be and they will begin to be an inwardly motivated student.
Growth Mindset is also a part of my regimen - the belief that we can all learn if we work hard and don't give up. Research has shown our brains grow more when we fail at something. It is in failed attempts we are learning the most.
So if your student says "I can't" add yet to that statement!!!
